Dr. Dhrubo Jyot Sen is a distinguished and multifaceted academician, researcher, and educator whose illustrious career spans over three decades. With a wealth of academic qualifications including a D.Pharm, B.Sc. (Hons), B.Pharm. (Hons), M.Pharm., and Ph.D., Dr. Sen has consistently demonstrated excellence in the field of pharmaceutical sciences. He is a Fellow of the Indian Chemical Society (FICS), a Chartered Chemist of both the Institution of Chemists, India (CChem FIC) and the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) (CChem FRSC), and a Chartered Scientist (CSci, UK). These accolades reflect his global recognition as a leader in chemistry and pharmaceutical sciences.
Dr. Sen is currently a Professor in the Department of Pharmaceutical Chemistry at the School of Pharmacy, Techno India University, Kolkata, where he continues to inspire the next generation of scientists and pharmacists. His contributions to the academic and research communities are underscored by numerous awards and honors, including the prestigious K.K. Acharjee Award, Jewel of India Award, Rashtriya Vidya Saraswati Puraskar, and Life Time Achievement Gold Medal Award. He has also been honored with the Eminent Educationist Award, International Gold Star Award, and the Bharat Excellence Award Gold Medal, among many others. Dr. Sen's work has earned him recognition across India and internationally, including the American Order of Merit, NEHS Global Award of Excellence, and the International Innovative Future Award. In 2025, he was awarded the Chancellor’s Gold Medal Jewel of Jewels and the Nobel Researcher Award in Pharmaceutical Chemistry, cementing his legacy as a trailblazer in his field.
Dr. Sen's academic journey began with a State Merit Scholarship from Bihar, where he excelled in his B.Sc. Honours in Chemistry, securing the sixth rank. His academic prowess continued with first rank in the D.Pharm examination, fifth rank in B.Pharm., and eighth rank in M.Pharm. His postgraduate and doctoral research, supported by the GATE scholarship, focused on innovative approaches to pharmaceutical chemistry, including the development of new methodologies for the synthesis of drug intermediates and the extraction of pure caffeine from tea leaves. His Ph.D. research centered on the investigation of newer anti-inflammatory, sedative-hypnotic, and antimicrobial agents, showcasing his commitment to advancing the frontiers of medicinal chemistry.
Dr. Sen’s research interests span a wide array of topics, including synthetic organic medicinal chemistry, pharmacology, and toxicology. He has pioneered green chemistry approaches in the synthesis of newer Mannich base and Schiff base derivatives of various heterocyclic compounds, including indan, oxadiazole, pyrazole, and caffeine derivatives. These compounds exhibit a range of pharmacological activities, such as anti-inflammatory, antihypertensive, antioxidant, antidiabetic, and antimicrobial properties. His work on molecular latensation, bioisosterism, and repository forms of indan derivatives has further expanded the scope of drug development.
Dr. Sen is also deeply engaged in the study of COX-1 and COX-2 inhibitory effects of both synthesized compounds and herbal extracts, highlighting his interest in the intersection of traditional and modern medicine. His research on ionic liquid-based green chemistry synthesis and kinetic studies has positioned him at the forefront of sustainable and efficient chemical processes in pharmaceutical development.
Beyond his academic and research contributions, Dr. Sen is an active member of several professional organizations, including the Indian Pharmaceutical Association, Indian Science Congress Association, and the Royal Society of Chemistry. His memberships and fellowships reflect his commitment to fostering collaboration and advancing the scientific community.
